The Windows product key is the 25-character code that is used to activate Windows. It looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Where to look for your product key depends on how you have your copy of Windows:
From an authorized retailer. The product key is on the label or tag inside the box where Windows comes.
A new computer running Windows. The product key is pre-installed on your computer, comes with the packaging that the PC has inserted, or is included in the PC Authentication Certificate (COA).
Digital copy from the Microsoft website. The product key is in the confirmation email you received after purchase. Or, it could be distributed as a digital license if you purchased Windows 10 product key, in which case it does not include the product key. Learn more about activation in Windows.
Free Upgrade to Windows 10. If you upgrade to Windows 10 for free from Windows 7 home premium product key or Windows 8.1, you should have a digital license instead of a product key. For more information about digital licensing in Windows 10, see Activation in Windows 10.
